On January 24, 2023, the international conference »Towards a greener Defence: the challenge of sustainable development for European Defence industries« will be held in Bordeaux, France. The event is taking place in the framework of the European Network of Defence-related Regions (ENDR).

The conference is focusing on finding solutions to the challenges of greening defence sector and sustainable development of the European defence industry. International experts will share their knowledge and experiences with the conference participants as they strongly believe that solving these challenges requires cooperation between civil and defence stakeholders, strengthening the development of dual-use solutions and research and innovation in the field of energy (green energy, renewable sources, efficiency and energy storage, etc.).

Among the invited speakers is Matej Gajzer, director of TECES and president of SiEnE, who will present the Slovenian experiences and good practices of the holistic integration of civil and defence stakeholders. Since the SiEnE partnership establishment, together with the Slovenian Ministry of Defence (SI MoD), more focus has been dedicated to the challenges of the greening defence sector.

Defence sector initiative

Similar to civil society, the defence sector also faces modern challenges of sustainable development in the context of finding suitable solutions for mitigating climate conditions and adapting to climate change, as well as efficient use of energy and renewable energy sources.

Greening defence sector and reaching the European Green Deal objectives have become the primary importance for the European defence industry, which is aiming to strengthen cooperation between civil and defence companies (for civil and defence purposes – dual use).

For this purpose, on January 24, in Bordeaux, France, the European Commission, the Regional Council of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, its Development and Innovation Agency and its regional partners will organize the international conference “Towards a Greener Defence: the challenge of Sustainable Development for European defence industries“.

Where are the solutions for the greening defence sector?

At the international conference, taking place in the framework of the European Network of Defence-related Regions (ENDR), participants will exchange views on the importance of the challenge of sustainable development for the European defence industry, exchange best practices and introduce existing solutions contributing to the greening of the sector and implementing the Green Deal objectives, enhance synergies between civil and defence companies, identify needs from the industry and introduce EU programmes supporting R&D.

At the conference there will be 14 invited speakers, coming from various European ministries of defence, the European Commission (DG DEFIS), the European Defence Agency (EDA), the Directorate-General for Energy (DG ENER), defence industries, etc.

Among the invited speakers is Matej Gajzer, director of TECES and civilian coordinator of the Slovenian Energy and Environment Partnership in Defence (SiEnE). He will present the experiences and good practices from the support of the integration of civil and defence stakeholders within the SiEnE partnership, as well as support for research and development and technological demonstration pilot projects for the development of dual-use solutions.

About the role of TECES | SiEnE in the international defence environment

TECES | SiEnE partnership, together with the Slovenian Ministry of Defence (SI MoD), has become very recognizable in Europe through the active inclusion and participation in international defence programs with dual-use solutions in the green transition, energy and environment in the defence.

TECES | SiEnE leading position in greening defence is clearly recognised as TECES is the coordinator in the project “INDY, Energy Independent and Efficient Deployable Military Camps” and a strategic partner in the project “NOMAD, Novel energy storage technologies usable at Military Deployments in forward operating bases“, which were approved in the first tender within the European Defence Fund (EDF) in 2021.
