On 31st March 2022 the European Defence Agency (EDA) and the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) organized the 1st workshop on » Waste to energy technologies in defence (WANTED)«.

The purpose of the workshop was to explore and collect appropriate WTE solutions applicable to the defence sector and military deployable camps. The objectives of the workshop were to identify the solutions applied for waste management (WM) and WTE technologies in the civil sector and study the advantages, challenges and operational concerns for each respective solution when transferring these technologies to the military domain.

The workshop was attended by more than 35 EnE CapTech members and experts in the field of waste management of the Member States, including representatives of the Slovenian partnership SiEnE.

On 31 March 2022, the 1st online workshop ” Waste to energy technologies in defence (WANTED)” was held, organized by the European defence agency (EDA) and the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO). The workshop was attended by more than 35 international EnE CapTech representatives and experts in the field of waste management, including representatives of the Slovenian partnership SiEnE.

The workshop presented a one-year study “Waste to energy technologies in defence (WANTED)”, carried out under the auspices of TNO. The study includes an analysis of current state-of-the-art waste-to-energy (WTE) technologies for the classification of different waste types and streams in current Member States’ practices. Alternative and sustainable waste management solutions were presented with the introduction of technologies for waste-to-energy production in military camps. The introduction of these technologies could improve and/or replace current waste management and disposal processes to achieve safe, healthy, and energy-efficient waste management.

The purpose of the workshop was to explore and collect appropriate WTE solutions applicable to the defence sector and military deployable camps. The objectives of the workshop were to identify the solutions applied for waste management (WM) and WTE technologies in the civil sector and study the advantages, challenges, and operational concerns for each respective solution when transferring these technologies to the military domain.

During the workshop, two parallel sessions were dedicated to open and active discussion: the Applicability of waste treatment technologies in the military domain, and the Useful energy sources for an operational military camp.

As an EnE CapTech member, the representatives of the SiEnE partnership regularly attend events under the auspices of the EDA and NATO. By involving SiEnE’s partnership representatives in various international expert groups, EDA’s programs and initiatives (EnE CapTech, IF CEED, CF SEEDS), projects and global defence value chains, partnership SiEnE aims to establish and strengthen international cooperation between Slovenian stakeholders and international partners, especially in the field of energy, defence and/or dual-use).
