In parallel with signing the letter of support, the minister signed two more contracts for research, development, and innovation projects with Slovenian companies.
With this act, the ministry continues its efforts towards the modernization of the Slovenian Army. It aims to encourage the Slovenian defence industry and research technology organisations to participate in developing dual-use solutions which can also be used for defence purposes, as well as for civil protection and humanitarian aid.
The Si MoD is allocating 12,5 million euros for national research development and innovation projects this year and 23 million euros next year.
The “INDY, Energy Independent and Efficient Deployable Military Camps” project was approved by the European Commission (EC) for co-financing in the first public tender from the European Defence Fund (EDF) in 2021.
INDY’s expected outcome is a strategic roadmap to develop and implement solutions for future energy-independent and efficient deployable military camps.
The 14 million euros project represents one of the first strategic projects of greening the European defence sector. It involves 31 partners and subcontractors from 13 European countries and is supported by 9 Ministries of Defence.
The project is coordinated by the Slovenian partner TECES, Green Tech Cluster, with the support of the Slovenian Ministry of Defence (Si MoD), which is also responsible for coordinating and directing the involved representatives of the Ministries of Defence in the project.
With the signing of the letter of support for the INDY project and the activities carried out by TECES and SiMoD under the auspices of the SiEnE partnership, national strategic programme Smart energy efficient deployable dual-use camps also began with its implementation.
The program with the official name “Smart Energy Efficient and Independent Deployable Dual-Use Camps (SmartEEC I and II)” got its initiation with a visionary R&D study on the possibilities of developing smart energy-efficient camps for civil and defence purposes.
The study was carried out between 2020 and 2021 for the Si MoD by TECES and its members to find solutions for the specific needs of the Ministry of Defence, Slovenian Armed Forces (SAF) and the Administration of the Republic of Slovenia for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief (ACPDR) regarding support to the green transition.
The study presented proposals for development measures and a plan for a 10-year development strategy, to take into account the development capacities and capabilities of Slovenian stakeholders. Furthermore, the study highlighted international cooperation opportunities in defence programmes.
The extremely ambitious program of integrating Slovenian partners into international defence and civilian value chains is gaining additional momentum with the support of SiMoD to new projects in the coming years.
